Sophomore Strahinja Trecakov earned first team singles honors, while sophomore Naveen Manivannan was named a second team honoree. “This is a bright light after a very tough ending to the season last week,” head coach Carlos Vargas said. “I’m happy for all the guys and their accomplishments this year and this is well deserved. It’s a great honor to be recognized after a very good season.”

Courtesy of New Mexico State University LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State junior women’s tennis player Susana Alcaraz was named Athlete of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference for the week of April 7-13. The honor is the first for the team and for Alcaraz this season.
Courtesy of the WAC DENVER – New Mexico State third baseman Derek Umphres was named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week, respectively, for March 31-April 6. Umphres, a sophomore from Safford, Ariz. (Safford HS), hit .500 (8-for-16), striking out only one time in four games last week. The Aggies went 3-1 on the week, while sweeping WAC opponent Northern Colorado and falling to in-state rival New Mexico. Umphres picked up seven singles and a home run while finishing the week with nine RBI and a .688 slugging percentage. Umphres also tallied two walks and two sacrifice flies while not allowing a single error on defense. He did what he could in a loss to the Lobos on April 2 as he was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. In a series-opening win over Northern Colorado, Umphres went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. He is currently hitting a team-high .345 on the year with 39 hits and 24 RBI. Courtesy of New Mexico State University DENVER – New Mexico State’s Viviana Macias has been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for March 24-30. Macias, a sophomore from Guadalajara, Mexico (COBAEJ), helped the Aggies finish in a tie for sixth place at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., after posting a career-best total score of 2-over par 218 to finish in 10th place. Macias broke her previous career best by four strokes. She kicked off the tournament by shooting an even-par 72 during the first round and capped off the tournament by tying her career-low round, a 1-under par 71 in the final round. It is the first time in her NM State career that Macias has shot two rounds of par or better in a single tournament. Macias’ 10th place finish is her second top-10 performance of the year and her fifth-consecutive top-20 finish. Courtesy of New Mexico State University LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The National Collegiate Equestrian Association has selected its 2013-14 All-America class, as three NM State riders were honored. The NCEA also announced its Second-Team All-America class and the All-America Honorable Mention squad.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – For the second time this season, the New Mexico State softball team was awarded the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors by the league office for the week of March 24-30. Senior catcher Alyssa Ruiz was named Hitter of the Week while redshirt sophomore Karysta Donisthorpe earned Pitcher of the Week accolades. The award is a first for both players.
Courtesy of New Mexico State University LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Dallas McBride, one of New Mexico State softball’s 2014 signees, was named National High School Player of the Week by MaxPreps and the NFCA. The award, announced Tuesday, was for McBride’s performance during the week of March 17-25.
Representing the western region, the pitcher and first baseman helped her team go 6-1 during the week with a .688 batting average (11-for-16). She hit four home runs, two doubles and tallied 16 RBI. In the circle, McBride worked 27.2 innings and struck out 36 batters. The senior from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., is currently hitting .452 on the season with seven home runs, five doubles and 26 RBI. She has struck out 86 batters in 62.2 innings in the circle. McBride joins Rachel Rodriguez, Corrin Green and Amy Bergeson as part of the Aggies 2014 signing class. The four each signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Aggies starting next fall. LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State’s Patrick Pfister was named Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 10-16 by the Western Athletic Conference announced Tuesday.

Courtesy of New Mexico State University Denver, Colo. -- New Mexico State infielder Kent Blackstone has been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week, for February 24-March 2. Blackstone, a sophomore from Vienna, Va. (George C. Marshall HS), hit .538 (7-for-13) on the week with five runs, five RBI, one double, one home run and three walks. Blackstone stood out in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. He doubled and had a home run in the game. He was also impressive in game two of Saturday’s twin bill, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one run and a hit-by-pitch. With his efforts against Oakland, Blackstone raised his batting average over .300 for the season. The Aggies head to Lubbock, Texas this week to face Texas Tech March 6-9. Courtesy of New Mexico State University LAS CRUCES, N.M.--For the fourth straight week, the New Mexico State softball team has earned the Hitter of the Week honors by the Western Athletic Conference. This week, junior centerfielder Staci Rodriguez was honored for the week of Feb. 24-March 2. This is the second time this season Rodriguez has received the honor. Rodriguez, a Paramount, Calif. native, hit .700 with five home runs, 10 RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base at the Eller Media Stadium Classic last week. She posted a impressive 2.200 slugging percentage and a .824 on-base percentage, and drew six walks over the five games. Rodriguez smashed two homers in a 13-3 win over Binghamton, including her second grand slam of the season. She also had two bombs in a 14-5 win over Seton Hall and added another in a win over host UNLV. The team went 3-2 on the weekend to improve to a 13-7 record. NM State now looks to face cross-border rival UTEP on Tuesday, March 4 in El Paso, Texas. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. Senior right-hand pitcher Celisha Walker was name WAC Pitcher of the week and sophomore Fiana Finau picked up Hitter of the Week accolades. This is the first honor for both players this season, but the third straight week the Aggies have been recognized by the conference office.
